The Russian battle tank T-72 has been a long-standing asset in the Indian military. It was first introduced in the 1970s and has since played a crucial role in various operations.
The T-72 tank is known for its reliability and robustness. It features composite armor and spaced armor modules, providing protection against anti-tank missiles and shells. While its armor may not be as advanced as modern tanks, it still offers substantial defense capabilities.
The tank is armed with a 125mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing a range of projectiles, including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds and high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) shells. It also possesses a coaxial machine gun and anti-aircraft machine guns for additional firepower.
Though lacking some of the advanced features of newer tanks, the T-72 is equipped with basic targeting systems, night vision capabilities, and fire control systems. These systems, while not as advanced as those found in more recent tanks, allow for effective engagement on the battlefield.
The T-72 has seen action in various conflicts and has been deployed in different operational roles, including armored warfare and border defense. It has proven to be a reliable and cost-effective asset for the Indian military, playing a significant role in ensuring national security.
While newer tanks like the T-90S Bhishma have been introduced into the Indian Army, the T-72 continues to be in service due to its availability and familiarity. It serves as a valuable component of India's armored fleet, complementing the more modern tanks and maintaining a diverse and capable force.
