Developed by German engineer Karl Benz, the Patent-Motorwagen was purpose-built around an internal-combustion engine rather than being simply a conventional carriage adapted to accept an engine.
Benz applied for a patent for his motor vehicle in January 1886, and the machine subsequently became widely recognized as a foundational automobile in the development of modern personal transportation.
Its construction was radically different from today's cars. The Patent-Motorwagen used three wheels, a lightweight tubular frame and a single-cylinder four-stroke petrol engine mounted at the rear.
Yet the fundamental idea was revolutionary: a self-propelled vehicle engineered specifically around its own powerplant.
The importance of the vehicle was further demonstrated by Bertha Benz in 1888, when she undertook a pioneering long-distance journey in a Patent-Motorwagen. Her journey demonstrated the practical potential of motorized personal transport and became one of the most celebrated episodes in early automotive history.
More than a century later, the Patent-Motorwagen remains an enduring symbol of the beginning of the automobile age.
