This Automotive Firsts – The First Long-Distance Automobile Journey Coffee Mug Collectible celebrates Bertha Benz's extraordinary journey in August 1888, an event that became one of the defining moments in the history of the motor car.
Bertha Benz, wife and business partner of automobile pioneer Karl Benz, travelled with her sons Eugen and Richard from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany using a Benz Patent-Motorwagen.
The journey covered approximately 106 kilometres one way-an extraordinary undertaking at a time when automobiles, fuel stations and the supporting infrastructure of modern motoring simply did not exist.
The trip was far more than an adventurous drive.
Along the route, Bertha had to overcome practical problems with the pioneering machine, demonstrating both resourcefulness and an understanding of the vehicle.
Fuel itself presented a challenge. Ligroin, used as fuel by the vehicle, was obtained from a pharmacy in Wiesloch-an event that has led the pharmacy to be popularly associated with the story of the world's first filling station.
The journey demonstrated that Karl Benz's invention was not merely an experimental machine. An automobile could provide practical transportation over meaningful distances.
Bertha's experience also helped identify areas where the vehicle could be improved, contributing to the further development of the Patent-Motorwagen.
Today, her journey is recognized as a milestone in automotive history and an important part of the story behind the development and acceptance of the motor car.
